MY CAMPAIGNS

Introduction

With a long-term troubled life and the hardships that I have faced, I have became a humanistic thinker with deep eagerness inside me to practice the democracy as human being. I thought the UNHCR would provide me at least the minimum level of security and help to live as respectful human being able to practice his human rights. But unfortunately, I was wrong completely in my thoughts about UNHCR. I'm very sorry to discover that the UNHCR have the same policies as Saddam Hussein, the tyrant of Iraq!

I left my country because it was hard for me to continue my life in my country because of the persecution and the policies of tyrant regime that exist on punish any one who dare to speak or to ask just a question, Saddam considered the criticism a big crime and it deserve death.

Regrettable to discover that what I left behind my back is exist in front of me. The same policies of Saddam Hussein exist in the UNHCR procedures. The punishment that any refugee face if he dare to ask a question and the killing for any one who critic the UNHCR. All that happened with me. What a painful truth!!!

I changed my sadness and my desperation into words as articles and I sent it on the Internet to any place that my connection able to deliver my messages, any where all over the World Wide Web. My targets were:

• To find answers for our questions as refugees.

• Show our situation as refugees.

• Tell the truth about the UNHCR.

• Working for change the bad policies and the bad procedures of the UNHCR and to improve its performance.

• Creating some kind of community to watch the functioning of UNHCR.

• Building some kind of connection between the refugees and the community.

That was one of my missions. And they tried to stop me by different ways, I told them if you can find one word not correct in my messages so I’m ready to stop, until now they failed to find any thing not correct! So I continued my missions and my campaigns with sending thousands and thousand of emails everywhere in the world.

In normal life when you go to any house, you knock on the door for once and you wait until someone opens the door for you, if no one opens it, normally you will knock again and again, one time, 2 times, 3, 4… This is what happened with me, I sent one message and waited for a reply, but there was none, so then I sent one again but also no reply then I sent 2 messages at the same time, no reply again, Then I continued and sent 3,4-1000s of messages also with no reply! I have only had threats face to face from those who are working in the UNHCR office in Beirut and one email from those whom working in the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva had been sent to ISP in Lebanon about my campaigns!

In the beginning I just wanted to have answers to my questions. I started sending messages with my story and my questions but no body in the world answered me. I contacted UNHCR, other UN and NGO organizations, I just wanted an answer! Is that too much for man in a bad situation looking for help from the people had been paid to help people like me? They had been paid to read and to reply to messages like mine but they didn’t. 

For me they weren’t honest people and I felt that I had the right to do this because they were so unjust. So they didn’t answer any of my messages.

I used mass mailing not only to find the answers but also to bring public attention to our situation as refugees; all my campaigns were a reaction to specific incidents with UNHCR in Beirut.

I’m still felt after all  that I had the right to: 

• Ask questions and to have them answered
• Use my right of speech to express my ideas, opinions, thinking and my feelings.
• Use my ability to help people who are in need as an activist for Human rights, democracy and peace.

And that doesn’t give UNHCR the right to:

• Refuse to answer my questions.
• Threaten me with using the authority just because I’m an illegal resident (Refugee).
• Work to close my websites.
• Work to prevent me from using Internet connection.
• Reveal information from my file illegally and without my permission.

I have faced injustice and illegal actions from UNHCR that caused me harm, so I have the right to defend myself and to look for judgment in the court when I have the ability one day. I will continue to proclaim my right to be treated as a human being with all the rights that I have, according to all concepts that we hold dear as a fellow human being living on planet earth.

All the messages (articles) in this book were my first attempts to write in English. My original language is Arabic. I started to publish these articles at the beginning of year 2002. I wrote all my articles by myself and I published them on the net by my own effort. I found a good friend on the net at that time that offered to help me. She is a Canadian citizen, and helped me with editing most of the articles in this book. I would like to express my deep gratefulness for her help.

Honestly, I'm proud of my writing, it's true that my writing isn't a perfect literary masterpiece like the writing of Shakespeare or O. Henry, but it's good for an Iraqi refugee who failed to finish his studies because he didn't agree with the policies of the tyrant Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and to submit to the bad policies of UNHCR in Lebanon. Both were sure that providing any chance of a good life, with good opportunities for learning more skills, will help in strengthens his abilities to continue his walking towards freedom and democracy. That would strengthen his voice and help him in his struggle to be a respected human being living with all of his rights as a human being. So to them there is great danger in enabling other humans to have their rights!!!

Despite all of the hardships and the obstacles that Saddam and the UNHCR put in my way to stop me from reaching my targets, I continued my learning by completely depending on myself. I taught myself to write in English and to use the Internet. Now I’m learning PC programming! All this is to make my voice stronger. I’m proud of myself to achieve all this by depending on myself without any help from the UNHCR or the other money collectors who claim that they are asking for money to help the refugees to learn and to have a better life. I have used not one penny from the donor’s money that has been paid to the money collectors for the sake of helping refugees!!!
