Secularism & Fundamentalism Now the start of Islamic fundamentalism! The war started with
European colonialism after the First World War. With the occupation of
the Arabic homeland, the Moslems thought of it as: The modern Crusade or
Western attacks on the Islamic nation. The atmosphere in the Arabic homeland was fertile for the Islamic parties to grow because of the poverty and desperation that the Arabs experienced at this time. Burdened under colonialism and followers governments (Arabic leaders and the Zionist), the people suffered very much The people suffered much with despotism of those governors and the systems of governments that existed after World War1in Arabic homeland; there was injustice, poverty and death everywhere. Millions of people lost their lives; there were rivers of blood everywhere in the Arabic countries. Million of Algerians died in the war against French alone. The people found in Islamic ideology some hope that they could establish a legal system that would enable them to find justice. The big danger for colonialism, their Arabic leaders and Zionism was the Islamic ideology that was trying to re-establish an Islamic state as a united sovereign country under an Islamic government. This would have returned to using the Qur'an as the basis for the law, exactly as it was before colonialism. The Islamic Republic of Iran is just an example of the kind of Islamic system that they (the Arabs) were trying to establish in the Arabic countries. Colonialism tried to counter Islamic ideology in many ways; one of these was spreading a secular culture in Arabic countries to counter the Islamic tide. With this in mind, the colonists and their followers (Arabic leaders and the Zionists) worked very hard using economical means and education to achieve that target (spreading secularism) and imported western traditions and laws, under delusive slogan "modernization Arabic countries". In my opinion that happen because the colonialists and all the regimes that came afterwards (The Arabic leaders and the Zionists in Israel) understood that Islamic ideologies were a big danger to their existence and their policies, so they decided to fight that danger by any means they could. That meant, the modernization didn’t occur for behalf of the Arabs to help their developing but it was one way to enfeeble the influence Islamic ideology on the Arabs. If we look in the past 100 years of Arabic history, we can see that were the darkest years of our history, full of poverty that penetrated inside people, in their hearts, their minds until it reach their bones. This blocked any creative thinking. Illiteracy was prevalent as result of missing a good education system. People were living without hope. Sickness killed thousands of people, despotism, injustice, killing, rivers of blood. Until today still we can see this is the day-to-day reality in the majority of Arabic countries, so where is this modernization?! First face of moderation policies that the colonialism worked with directly after the world war1 was; creating systems of government in all Arabic countries loyal for the colonialists, ready to sign any treaty that will help the colonialism to control the economics of these countries. That was very important point; it's helped the colonists to steal the natural sources of the Arabs like oil for example. These systems (Arabic governments) were weak and without any legitimacy so its depend on the colonists to provide them with protection. Theses systems composed from people who had a strong desire to cooperate with the colonists and their policies; those people then made up the governmental class in the Arabic countries, and were the only ones other than the colonialists to benefit from modernization. The modernization was designed to give this class prosperity and riches. These people (the Arabic governors), kings, presidents, princes and their families with their big entourages, lived with all the western style and the best of the Arabic world also. They had the chance to study in western colleges and to absorb the western style with all of its materialistic concepts. But when we look at the ordinary people we see another picture, there wasn't any real modernization, and there wasn't any support from the western world in spreading new and advanced technologies between the Arabs. Until today we can see that the west have resisted any attempt of the Arabs to obtain advanced technology in any of the Arabic countries. Honestly there has been little progress in the Arabic countries in the last 100 years, but instead there has been westernization with materialism and secularism to replace and demolish the Islamic-Arabic cultures. Secularism
and modernization that started in Arabic countries aftermath the World
War1 have 2 major targets:
The Moslems had remarkable and flourished civilization before the Ottoman colonialism. But that civilization had vanished under Ottoman and European colonialism. Until today the Arabs trying to resurrect their lost civilization. The majority of Arabs
understood that the colonists' policies (Frenchmen in Algeria, for
example) and started to counter these policies. The people resisted
secularism and modernization by holding to Islam firmly, for that the
term ‘fundamentalism’ appeared in our terminology. In simple words,
the governors in the Arabic world (colonists, Arabic leaders and the
Zionists) encouraged and spread secularism, as modernization in the
region and those who refused that secularism, became the
fundamentalists! Fundamentalist:
Means someone who works within his {past, basic, primary, old or existing before} culture, ideology or tradition. Any resistance to new ideas or modern culture is fundamentalism.
Fundamentalism existed in all of the three major religions, Jewish, Christian and Islamic. Also it existed widely in all cultures throughout history, for example the resistance to Copernicus’s theories about the centralization of the sun in the universe. The Christian fundamentalists refused that theory completely and they burnt Copernicus with his books!!!
Another example is the backlash against Darwinism. We all remember the dark ages in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. Backlash against the scientific spirit was also very strong in Europe before the Industrial Revolution. The Christian fundamentalists accepted the new scientific ideas only when they understand the new ideas. New technology provided them with new financial resources to control more people, to have more wealth. I could say more about that subject but it's not my concern for the moment.
In Islam there was never any resistance to scientific research and progress, in fact Islam called for people to learn and to create new scientific ideas, as religious task, every Moslem must learn about life, in the same way as he does his religion. Islam supported scientific research as a way to provide a better life, not just for economical and political reasons like in Europe.
Fundamentalism in political terms is just resistance to western culture or to what they called modernization. Here there was a very important point in our history as humans on Earth, I call it ‘Americanization’.
After being discovered the new land (America) by Columbus, people started to immigrate to America from all around the world. They were full of dreams of good fortune; they of course took with them their original beliefs and traditions. They started to build a new nation, with new communities and new traditions; new America faced big problems with the influences of the old traditions and the people’s ethnic origins. In the beginning there was war of independence, and people have stayed grouped in communities, like the Irish or the Italians or even the Chinese. These communities stayed loyal to their origins, traditions and composed an obstacle in the face of creating an integrated and solid state.
The new American government and great thinkers of that time understood that they must demolish the identification with their origins in each new immigrant, replacing it with a loyalty to their new country, and with this in mind the Americans isolated themselves from the rest of the world. America had been built on waves of immigrants from different backgrounds and traditions and for the sake of living well in the new nation they must forget all this previous cultural identification as much as was possible. There was big struggle in early America, I call this; American fundamentalism, and the Americans worked hard to overcome it. Until today that term has bad connotations and that has reflected on all other meanings of fundamentalism.
Unfortunately the Americans didn't notice the different between their own dream to build strong a nation with different people from different backgrounds (American fundamentalism) and the Arabic dream to rebuild their own Islamic nation that they had before colonialism. The Americans chose their own way by themselves, but the Arabs had been forced to live the way that they have now by brute force, by killing and swimming in rivers of Arabic blood that has been shed by the colonialists and the Zionists who are helping them now. The Americans felt that fundamentalism was bad for them in America so it must be bad everywhere in the world and so they are fighting it everywhere they find it, especially in the Arabic homeland, they refuse to understand that Islamic fundamentalism could mean a great flourishing Islamic nation like they had before and the Arabs dream to have again one day.
It
seems the Americans are trying to apply what they use in their own country
to all the other countries of the world, when they know nothing of the
mentality of the inhabitants of these places! Always the Americans described that they know nothing about other countries! Because in my opinion, they are busy to know what is America at first! LOL.
But what do the Moslems fundamentalists think about themselves? The fundamentalists
represent themselves as people with Islamic ideology and Islamic
traditions that are able to provide the people with a good system of
government, that system would be able to create a good civilization (like
the one that existed before colonialism) And this government would provide
justice for the people which is what they have missed until today. The
fundamentals tried to explain to the people that colonialism and Zionism
worked to control the Arabic homeland and to steal the wealth (natural
resources) and to make the Arabs slaves) in their own country by using
force at first and then modernization and secularism secondly. The absence of justice and terrible poverty in the Arabic countries has been brought about by the failure of the systems of the colonialists and their followers to establish a good governmental system that able to replace the Islamic government which existed in Arabic homeland before colonialism. All that has given fundamentalism the fertilized soil it needed to grow deeply and strongly in the whole area. The fundamental activists present an 'alternative' to the impoverished masses with their slogan, 'Islam Is the Solution', coupled with social welfare programs in many places, not provided by the state, in addition to other various activities. I just like to tell you that Islamic fundamentalism phenomenon were noticeable after the First World War as back-lash for the colonialism polices. There was nothing called Islamic fundamentalism before that. Western colonialism occupied the Arabic homeland and tried to eliminate any resistance that countered colonialism existence on the Arabic land. Our problem as Arabs came
from the black fortune under our feet. The western colonialists needed
that fortune, they tried to steal our fortune by moving our feet but we
resisted, so he tried to move our mind by playing western music
(modernization and secularism). The Arabs are dancing now to that music,
so giving them the chance they needed to steal our black fortune from
under our dancing feet. But still there were some people not prepared to
dance to the tune that was being played, these were the ISLAMIC
FUNDAMENTALISTS. I hope you understand the
story of dancing feet.
