Chapter 4

TERRORISM

War on terrorism

Before I continue, and since we at the door of the red zone, I would like to define some words to help bring some more understanding here:

  • Fundamentalism:

Is a belief based on the rejection of anything new, resisting any renovation or modernization. Fundamentalism is synonymous with retardation, underdevelopment, and backwardness. In simple words, its continued operation depends on sticking to old ideas, and the complete rejection of anything new.

Historically, fundamentalism as an ideology started to enter our language with the American Protestant movement led by William Bell Riley A.C. Dixon, J Gresham Machem and others. They fought the rise of Darwinism, and wanted to keep to the old understanding of the bible and the traditional view of creation. So fundamentalism means the support of old ideas and the rejection of anything that changes it, anything modern.

  • Extremism:

Is a degree of comparison between two opinions (or more) used to describe the acceptance or the rejection between these ideas?

In all of our measurements there is Midst points where all ideas are acceptable by all parties, the rejection or objection for other ideas means moving far from the midst point to one direction. We can see that clearly in religions, politics an even between individuals, example in love and jealousy.

In our concern for Islamic extremism, we can see clearly the rejection of Arabs and Muslims for colonialism and Zionism. That rejection or refusal based on fundamentalist's ideology. In the other side, the Moslems and the Arabs considered the colonists' policies in modernization and secularization plus the western support for the injustice and despotic regimes in Arabic homeland (the Arabic rulers and the Israelis) are extremism also.

Obvious example for western extremism is the political and financial support and military protection that America providing now for Israel and another regimes (like in Kuwait) in Middle East.

  • Terrorism:

It's action combine with maximum violence, conduct by human (individually or in groups) to increase feelings of fear (to maximum degree of terror) inside his opponents to gain some benefits or advantages. Mostly terrorism using natural fear of death inside the human, and killing is major factor in terrorism actions.

Like we saw the fundamentalism led to extremism, when extremism associate with violence it will become terrorism (Feeling > believe > action).

Unfortunately with hundreds years of colonialism, despotism and injustice plus the extremism in all parties of the geopolitical game in Arabic homeland led us to recent situation.

There are some events in our history changed course of the life, like the Soviet occupation for Afghanistan and the war aftermath. That gave the Islamic and Arabic extremists the fertile soil to grow and to become strong. Those extremists had been expelled from their countries and they found the haven in Afghanistan, not only because they can work freely there but also because they found wide support from the Arabs and Moslems all around the world because the extremist fought in sake the Arabic cases (like liberate Palestine), and also support from the western because they fought against the Soviet at the time of cold war between the West and East.

In Afghanistan the extremists found a good opportunity to get trained in tactics for exactly that kind of war (guerrilla warfare) against the Soviets and they had also the support of the Americans and the Arabs, even financial support and they used it well.

The Moslem-Arabic extremists adopted their own special strategies, it depended on 2 points:

  1. They organized themselves into small groups in well-guarded secret places, so they can hide themselves after any operation, also at the same time they could keep watching for a good chance to attack more targets

  2. They fight in short battles, attacking fast and withdrawing fast, this way hopefully avoiding any counter attack because that could be fatal, and because they work this way they are able to repeat this method over and over again.

This continued until the end of the war against the soviets, after which many Moslems ‘almojahdin’, who were doing Jihad, (at this time they were friends with America and supported by the CIA), went back to their homes in many different Arabic countries. But the governments found that they were too dangerous to their own (the governments) existence, so the Arabic regimes declared war against the Almojahdin or Alakhwn Alafgan. In this war many of them were killed or went to jail, some escaped this and went to Europe and America or they stayed behind in Afghanistan.

Their strategy stays the same, as does the strategy of their targets (the injustice of the system of rule in Arabic countries). With the war against the soviets, Almojahdin (Now they are known as Al Qaida) became stronger and with end of the war they found themselves alone and facing the disrespect and distrust of the Arabic governments. The ordinary people thought they were heroes and this reinforced the feeling of injustice felt by them against the attitude of the Arabic governments. (look in the prisons of Egypt and Jordan).

Now I don't want to make excuses for them, it's just me trying to humbly explain the truth.
I would like to bring your attention to the following points:

·        With the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets the extremists became stronger especially after they started to receive the help of the Americans.

·        They belonged to different nationalities (Arabic and another countries) and they spread their activities into more countries (inside and outside the Arabic homeland).

Since they thought that America was the strongest country in the world and the biggest supporter of the Arabic leaders and Israel against the will of the Arabs, they imagined that America, Israel and the Arabic governments were joined like they are one big snake. This being the case they thought it is better to attack the head of the snake (America).

like that the terrorist attacks against America started.

You can see the targets of the extremists originally were the colonists and the Arabic rulers; afterwards it was the Soviets, and then the Americans. This development took years. Remember this from something I said before: Today is the son of yesterday and father of tomorrow.

Day after day, year after year. The circle of violence got deeper and bigger. Not one of the parties (the governments and the extremists) tried to open any channel of communication to try and find any solution for their problems. Each party had one target in front of him and that was destroying the other party, even when the balance of power was not equal between all parties. That led us to the recent situation or what had been called war on terrorism.

The equation was simple; one party had strong power, armies, jails, and torture. All of this was used to breed fear inside normal people, to be able to control them. The other party had none of this power, so they worked instead to bring fear to their opponents by attacking civilian targets, using ordinary things, like using civilian airplanes to attack civilian buildings and cars full of explosives. All of that just to cause the maximum degree of fear until it becomes terror (that is clear now with the aviation panic in the world) it’s clear also in Israel who fear the suicide bombers.

The people always want to live well, and to live well they need justice. When all our systems fail to provide people with justice, people will look to find it for themselves, this leads to violence and also revenge.

The extremists used violence to reach their targets because they felt there was no other choice, and since the extremists didn’t have the same power as the colonialists, Zionists and the Arabic leaders, they decided they would use terrorism (according my definition) to equalize the imbalance of the power between them and their enemies.
